Seena Hoose (1941-2008)
Former Board for Geologists and Geophysicists President Seena Hoose (Licensed Professional Geologist No. 4355, Certified Engineering Geologist No. 1492, Certified Hydrogeologist No. 5) passed away September 16, 2008 at the age of 67.
The second woman in history to receive the Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of California, Seena earned her undergraduate degree at UC Santa Barbara and her Master of Science in Geology from California State University, San Jose. During her research stint with the United States Geological Survey (USGS), she authored one of the leading USGS papers on the phenomenon of earthquake-induced liquefaction.
As Board Member (1993-2001) and Board President (1996-1999), Seena worked to strengthen public protection through professional geoscience licensure and accountability. She was a member of the Geological Society of America, Association for Women Geoscientists, Association of Engineering and Environmental Geologists, and Groundwater Resources Association.
More recently, in addition to her continued interest in Board matters as a private citizen and licensee, she continued her hands-on dedication to public service with her appointment by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to the State Mining and Geology Board in 2005.
Seena is survived by her husband Robert, sons Rowan and Shawn, and Shawn's wife, Dori.
